Deep Transmagnetic Stimulation, also known as dTMS, is a novel non-invasive treatment that uses pulsed magnetic fields to stimulate the cerebral cortex. This is usually done using a BrainWays device directly on a patient’s head. At Biotherapy International, we use custom modifications that harness the same type of magnetic stimulation to stimulate peripheral nerve endings.

Stimulating multipotent stem cells can have an anti-inflammatory effect across wider regions of the body. This can help with autoimmune conditions, or help restore lost functions of the central nervous system.  At Biotherapy International, we are seeking to combine these effects with those of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell (MSC) therapy to achieve stronger therapeutic effects.

This synergy can be explained through two different mechanisms:

  • It stimulates the nervous system and therefore affects organ function across the body.
  • It increases the amount of biologically-active stem cells, which increases the ability of MSCs to trans-differentiate.

Our advanced dTMS devices can be fitted over different anatomical areas. In this way, we can use these magnetic fields over a specific organ to enhance the effects of mesenchymal stromal cell therapy. At Biotherapy International, we use this to treat type 1 diabetes mellitus and kidney failure, among others.

Deep Transmagnetic stimulation is approved for use around the world. Over 60 medical trials have been performed to test its effectiveness. It is mainly indicated as a treatment for inflammatory and neurological conditions. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of dTMS to treat multiple sclerosis, stroke, neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, and several mental illnesses.
